The Comboni Call to Solidarity
What is the stand of the Comboni Missionary that reflects his true identity? In essence we find in the pierced heart of the Good Shepherd, the model, the source and strength to give our lives to the poorest. We live among the people, we immerse ourselves in their lives and walk with them as brothers and sisters, enlightened by the Gospel and by the Lord's Easter morning! Our Comboni identity spurs us to be with and for the poor, making common cause with them and learning to read the Word and everyday reality together.
Solidarity ~ through a life of poverty and simple living, the missionary follows Jesus Christ, who, in the spirit of solidarity with us, made himself poor though he was rich so that we might become rich by his poverty. The entire mission experience invites us to a constant journey of conversion, as we continually, review, revise and search out new styles of life, through an option for austerity and solidarity.
True mission is not measured by what we bring to the poor, but by how fully we allow ourselves to be transformed in walking beside them. For in their company, we discover that the Gospel is not a message we deliver, but a reality we learn together - where the supposed 'givers' become receivers, and Christ reveals himself not in our strength, but in our shared poverty and mutual dependence on divine grace.
