Living Water
Water ~ we are all dependent on it to live, as are plants and animals. Water doesn't come now as one thing and then as another thing, it comes always the same in itself ~ but produces different effects, one in the tree, another for the vine and so on throughout creation.
While remaining essentially the same, it adapts itself to the needs of every creature that receives it. In the same way, the Holy Spirit, whose nature is always the same, simple and indivisible, giving grace to each as the Spirit wills.
Like a dry tree that stretches out it's roots when watered, the soul can stretch and bear fruits of holiness when open to the Spirit. The Spirit strengthens one's self control, inspires and teaches... The Spirit comes gently and is not felt as a burden but as a true friend. Like Jesus when he was at the well with the Samaritan woman, he is asking what makes us most thirsty and in need of His living water? And how do we responded when invited to deepen our faith??
Just as water seeks the lowest places and fills them without force, so the Spirit flows most freely into the humble spaces we create through openness and surrender. The question is never whether the living water is available, but whether we have made room to receive it—whether our roots are reaching deep or our hands remain cupped in welcome.
