Cross, Martyrdom and Mission

We can get a view into St Comboni’s spiritual life as he speaks about Cross, Martyrdom & Mission:

“All Crosses and adversities that the Vicariate has recently undergone will only serve to strengthen the spirit of the members, who are faithful to this holy task, and determined to put our Vicariate on the road to certain future prosperity, because the works of God have always been born and have grown at the foot of the cross, and must, like Jesus Christ, go through the process of passion and death in order to reach the Resurrection.”

- St. Daniel Comboni

Through the cross and martyrdom that all the missions have been founded and have prospered... Just as Christ reached his glorious resurrection through his passion and death ~ the Catholic Church, which came out from his immaculate heart, has triumphed over the whole world in the blood of her martyrs.

Because of the tremendous labours, privations, illnesses, fevers and struggles, borne for many years but particularly in this last terrible period of drought and famine, I have really become much more sensitive to the blows of adversity and much weaker in bearing the Cross. But since we must always trust in God alone and in his grace... I have decided to abandon myself completely in the arms of divine Providence, which is the source of love for the downcast and the constant guardian of innocence and justice.

Let everything that God wishes, come about! I am happy in the cross, which, when borne willingly out of love, gives birth to victory and eternal life.”
