The Gospel of Presence: Mission at the Margins
One task of great importance for the Comboni Missionaries is the witness of communion, "a sign to the world and an attracting force that leads to faith in Christ" (Chrisifideles laici # 31). In our time, characterized by individualism and the return to nationalism, the Comboni Missionaries, precisely because we are international, are sent to announce by means of the witness of life, the value of fraternity and the mission to keep alive this sense of communion between peoples, races and cultures.
The journey of fidelity ~ fidelity to the mission and making common cause with the people in situations of war, danger and uncertainty have counteracted the temptation of dominance and paternalism in our missionary activity. The growing desire for deep spirituality and evangelical radicalism never finishes and is greater than any sign of weakness, individualism or superficiality in living our community life.
The Comboni Missionaries show that staying present in danger—making common cause with people in their darkest hours—strips away the missionary temptations of dominance and paternalism. You cannot play savior when you're equally vulnerable.
Their international witness challenges our age of division: borders and nationalism fragment humanity, but lived solidarity across races and cultures preaches a different gospel—one written not in words but in costly presence.
The core wisdom: True communion requires dying to comfort and control. The deepest spiritual hunger emerges precisely when we acknowledge our weakness. In choosing to stay when others flee, they embody the most powerful sermon: You are not alone.
Fidelity in the margins transforms mission from charity into kinship.
